Gender-biased inheritance rules are evolutionary stable: a case study

Abstract

We present a historical and game theoretic analysis of inheritance systems on common property employed in the Italian Alps between the thirteenth and the nineteenth century. We documented a transition from egalitarian inheritance rules toward a patrilineal system, which took place in a decentralized fashion. The study involved field work on the village charters of about 250 communities and early land registers data.
