Dr Bart Karstens
Bart Karstens is a postdoc researcher on the project ‘Legal Structures’ supported by NWO via the ‘Digging into Data’ challenge. The project consists of joint research by ACLE and ILLC and is supervised by prof. dr. G. Dari-Mattiacci and prof. dr. Rens Bod. The goal of the project is to identify structures in large legal documents, such as constitutions and civil codes, by means of retrieving patterns of references with the help of digital tools. The results will be used in comparative law, with focus on the study of relations between systems of law and economic performance. Among other things this requires historical interpretation of the results.
Bart Karstens has a background in historical and comparative studies at Utrecht University (MA, Institute of History) and Leiden University, where he was a Ph.D. candidate in the project ‘Philosophical Foundations of the Historiography of Science’. Further, he obtained a degree (drs.) in Artificial Intelligence, with specialization in computational linguistics and logic, from Utrecht University. His research interests are in the history and philosophy of science and he published on a variety of topics such as the history of linguistics, the philosophy of history (of science), the formation of scientific disciplines and the conceptualization of the notion of error. He will be acting as a teacher in the Minor Law and Economics in 2014-2015.
