2016 Annual ACE conference at UvA

The 14th annual conference of the Association of Competition Economics (ACE) will be held 17-18 November 2016 at the University of Amsterdam, Netherlands.

The ACE conference

At this conference, competition authorities present their most interesting cases of the previous year from the point of view of the economics applied in the case, which subsequently are each critically discussed by a consultant involved and an independent academic expert. The prestigious event is jointly organized with the Amsterdam Business School (ABS) and the Amsterdam Center for Law and Economics (ACLE). The event each year attracts between 200 and 250 practitioners, agency officials, consultants and academics active in the area of competition policy.

Social program

At the end of the Thursday afternoon program at the Business School, a boat trip through the Amsterdam canals will stop at the University Aula (Oude Lutherse kerk, Singel 411), where the keynote lecture of Daniel Rubinfeld will take place. Afterwards, the boats will take us further to the EYE movie museum, where a walking dinner will be served. The EYE is fabulously located at the IJ, north of Central Station. That evening is the opening night of the IDFA (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam) at EYE too, with documentaries premiering at 20.00 and 22.00 o‘clock. ACE participants are welcome to go see a film, or two. Tickets can be reserved when registering for ACE at the ACE website. After diner and film, the public ferry will bring you back to Central Station, from where you can go to your hotel. 

22:00 O'Clock Film - ABACUS: Small Enough to Jail

The documentary ABACUS: Small Enough to Jail tells the story of the only U.S. bank that faced criminal charges in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis: a family-owned bank serving immigrants in Chinatown, New York. Charged with fraud, the Sung family vigorously defends themselves - and the Chinese-American community's financial way of life - over several years in an underdog battle for justice.

Arriving and leaving Amsterdam

Schiphol airport is best reached by regular train service. The 15-minute train ride leaves every 10 to 15 minutes from Amsterdam Central Station, which is a 10-minute taxi ride from the conference venue. The conference venue is also easy accessible by taking the metro at Amsterdam Central Station, get out at stop Waterloo Square, exit ‘Hortusplantsoen’. A taxi from the conference venue to Schiphol airport would take about 25 minutes.

Public Transport

You can buy train tickets from the yellow machines at the railway station. Some machines take credit cards and/or coins, some machines only take Dutch bank cards. For other types of public transport (bus/metro/tram) you will need an electronic transport card (“ov chip card”).
